The song we’re looking at is off of their incredibly successful “American Idiot” album and is the first track off of it. This is quite a fast track, clocking in at 176 beats per minute, but because the rhythms are all quarter and eighth notes, it’s quite easy to play.

The song we’re looking at is off of their incredibly successful “American Idiot” album and is the first track off of it. This is quite a fast track, clocking in at 176 beats per minute, but because the rhythms are all quarter and eighth notes, it’s quite easy to play. What we need to focus on is switching the power chords between the sixth and fifth strings because that can be a little challenging at this tempo, especially when our tone is so distorted (mistakes and noise stand out more with distortion). 

Also, take the time to get the position shifting developed for the solo because the left hand jumps around a bit. 
 
We are in the key of Ab Major for this, so it’s a good idea to map out the key and look at what chords are being used and in what formation.
