I have created 10 licks in Fusion Jazz style, which will help you improve your hybrid picking technique, strength of the left hand and the most important thing – your Jazz Fusion vocabulary.

The harmony follows the Dorian progression in F# minor, using just two chords –

F#min7 for two bars and B7 for two bars.

Lick No.1

On the starting lick, I play F#min6 arpeggio with some passing notes over F#min7. Over B7 I stay pretty much diatonic, superimposing the Amaj arpeggio (creating a B13 sound)

Lick No.2

In this lick, I have implemented F#min and B7 ( Bsus as well ) arpeggios with some passing/approach notes. This is a great exercise for the left had strength too. Try to fret a note with your left hand without using a pick (aka “hammer-on’s from nowhere”) and do a balance between them and the notes played with a pick.

Lick No.3

Over F#min7 I play the Dorian mode and I also outline the Amaj7 arpeggio which gives a F#min9 flavor. Over B7 I play some lines using 4ths (aka Frank Gambale)

Lick No.4

This lick starts with a phrase in F# melodic minor scale, followed by some chromatics. After, I use F#min11 and B9 arpeggios. Great pentatonic sequence at the end, useful in any style and song.

Lick No.5

This one is a great example of how to use passing tones while superimposing chords over the harmony.

Lick No.6

Maybe my favorite lick from the series. Diatonic arpeggios over F#min with palm muted hybrid picking. String skipping included too, so get your right hand ready. P.S. Tapping alert 

Lick No.7

A lot of chromatics and hammer-on’s from nowhere. This one will make your left hand a deadly weapon.

Lick No.8

Starts with the blues scale and again the hammer-on’s from nowhere. Slides included too. The passing notes to the 6th of F#min are there to give you the Dorian fusion flavor. B9 arpeggio over B7.

Lick No.9

More arpeggios! Diatonic arpeggios over F#min7 followed by some cool tricks to impress the audience.

Lick No.10

Arpeggios with chromatics, my favorite thing. Great exercise for left hand fingers independence.

Practice the licks slowly, with the backing tracks provided. Start with 80bpm and then slowly increase the tempo (120bpm, 140bpm, 165bpm)

Hope you will find this lesson useful. Have fun and check out my other lessons at the market.

Good luck,

Damjan
